Chapter 11

“Finished?” Joseph asked when Milani stepped inside the guest bedroom where he was looking at an entire wall of awards and accolades from all the barbecue contests Hal had entered over the years. “The man sure did know barbecue.”

“That he did.” She stepped up beside Joseph. “I tried like crazy to get his recipe for sauce, but he refused.”

“He did like me better than you. I had my doubts until now.” He flicked a glance at her profile, laughing when she gasped.

“He gave you his recipe?” There was a squeal in her voice.

“A long time ago. Of course, I was with him when he spent an entire day cooking up a hundred versions of that sauce.”

“I want that recipe,” she demanded.

“Pfft. Obviously, he didn’t want you to have it.”

“He’d want me to have it now.” She was very serious.

“It’s not mine to give.”

“Joseph Wayne! I should have that recipe.”

He laughed, couldn’t help himself. Her eyes were wide and sparkling with agitation. Over barbecue sauce. “Nope.” He stepped away from the wall and took one last look at the bedroom full of memories.

“You’re doing this on purpose.”

He swung around. “Nah. I just don’t give away secrets.”

“Fine. I don’t want it any way.”

“Why are you so angry?

“I’m not. I want to go.”

He started for the door, but he got thwapped hard in the back with a pillow.

He turned and settled his gaze on her. “What the hell was that for?”

“You deserve it!” One corner of her mouth danced with a smile.

“Yeah?” He strolled over to the bed and grabbed one of the pillows. “Two can play this game.”

She backed up. “You wouldn’t dare.”

“I would.” He had a much longer arm reach, so he smacked her in the shoulder with the pillow. He expected the game to be over then, but she came at him, hitting him hard in the head. This didn’t shock him because he knew exactly how feisty she could be.

She was laughing hard now.

He lifted the pillow and brought it against her, sending her falling to the bed. She was no longer laughing. Her shoulders were moving, and he could hear her sniffling.

“Shit, Milly. I’m sorry.” He was next to her on the bed, moving her hair away from her face. “What’s wrong? Did I hurt you?” He felt like a dick.

“Never mind.”

Agitation stirred in him. When she started to move away, he caught her wrist and pulled her back, forcing her to face him. Wetness stained her cheeks. Using the pad of his thumb, he wiped away the moisture. “Hey, you’re either very emotional about barbecue, pillow fights, or something else entirely.”

She closed her eyes for a moment and when she opened them the tears were gone in exchange for something else he couldn’t quite read. “This. All of this. I’m at a breaking point.”

“I cared for him too, Milly. He was like a brother. I don’t have one single memory from my childhood that doesn’t include him. Hell, that doesn’t include you.”

Her chin came up, their eyes met in a clash of emotion.
